英語ライティング 悪例1：日本語をそのまま翻訳

英語の文章を書くときに気を付けることを幾つか紹介していきます。

日本語の文に引きずられて英語では不自然な文章になってしまうケース。

例1

誤：Although the global financial crisis existed, the country was not as severely affected as its neighbours.

日本語の「～がある（あった）」という表現に引きずられて、existという単語を使ってしまっています。

正：Although there was a global financial crisis, the country was not as severely affected as its neighbours.

例2

誤：There was a free journalist at the crime scene.

フリージャーナリストは和製英語で、そのまま使ってしまうと意味が通じません。

和製英語は普段何気なく使っているので、そのまま英語にしてしまうことが少なくありません。そして、その間違いに気づきにくいものです。

この間違いをしないようにするには、普段からどの単語が和製英語なのかと意識を高く持っている必要があります。

正：There was a freelance journalist at the crime scene.

例3

誤：That topic was the main of the meeting.

日本語でいう「メイン」とは違い、英語では単独で使われません。

Mainは名詞の前に置かれ、名刺を修飾する形容詞です。

正：That was the main topic of the meeting.

例4

誤：In the last World Cup Tournament the Japanese team fought with the England team.

「戦う」といっても文章の意味によって動詞を使い分ける必要があります。

日本語「～と戦う」という表現に引きずられてwithを使っているのも誤りです。

正：In the last World Cup Tournament the Japanese team played against the England team.

例5

誤：He challenged the entrance examination to the top national university.

日本語で「チャレンジする」は「大きな課題や試練に挑む」という意味がありますが、この文章では別の動詞を使った方がしっくりきます。

正：He attempted the entrance examination to the top national university.

例6

誤：The price was expensive.

「OOが高い」と英語で表現する場合、OOの内容によって違う単語が使われるので注意します。

正：The price was high.
