英語ライティング 悪例2：日本語の意味を間違ったまま翻訳

よく似た意味の英単語が複数存在する場合にどれを使ったら良いのか判断に迷うケース。

どうしたらいいのか？

答えだけ先に言ってしまうと

1. 辞書で調べる
2. 文章のままネット検索して一般的に使われる単語を調べる

です。

「文章のままネット検索して一般的に使われる単語を調べる」というのは、具体的にいえば、下記の例文だと“permitted to the university” と“accepted to the university”でネット検索することです。　

注意点は、文章を””で囲んでいること。

検索結果から、どちらが一般的かは一目瞭然です。

「許す」「認める」

誤：The student was permitted to the university.

正：The student was accepted by the university.

「要求する」「必要とする」

誤：He demanded wheelchair access.

正：He required wheelchair access.

「職業」「仕事」

誤：She was looking for a profession.

正：She was looking for a job

「面白く思う」「関心がある」

誤：He was intrigued by philosophy.

正：He was interested in philosophy.

「一風変わった」「特有の」

誤：The country has a peculiar culture.

正：The country has a unique culture.
